READING STOCK QUOTES
Plain English
A stock quote is like a snapshot of a stock's vital signs. It shows you the current price, today's high and low, trading volume, the previous close, and key financial ratios — everything you need at a glance.
Going deeper
A stock quote displays real-time or delayed pricing data. Key fields include: Last Price (most recent trade), Bid/Ask (what buyers offer and sellers demand), Day's High/Low, 52-Week High/Low, Volume (shares traded today), Average Volume, Previous Close, Open Price, Market Cap, P/E Ratio, Dividend Yield, and EPS (Earnings Per Share). The percentage change from the previous close tells you how the stock is performing today. Understanding each field helps you quickly assess a stock's current state, liquidity, and basic valuation.
Examples
Reading a Quote
AAPL: Last $185.50, Change +$3.20 (+1.76%), Open $183.00, High $186.10, Low $182.50, Volume 45M, Avg Vol 55M, Mkt Cap $2.9T, P/E 29.5, Div Yield 0.55%. The stock is up today, trading below average volume, with a moderate valuation.
52-Week Range
A stock trading at $45 with a 52-week range of $30–$80 is in the lower half of its range. This might signal value (if fundamentals are intact) or trouble (if the business is declining).
