BUYBACK-YIELD TILT
BullishDefined riskIntermediate
Overview
Overweight stocks with high buyback yields (PKW, SPYB) or screen individually for companies retiring 5%+ of shares annually. Buybacks often signal management confidence and durable cash flow.
Setup
- 1.Use a buyback-yield ETF or build a 20-30 name basket.
- 2.Filter: buyback yield >5%, payout ratio <80%, debt/equity <1.0.
- 3.Confirm buybacks are funded by cash flow — not new debt.
- 4.Rebalance annually.
- 5.Hold 5+ years to capture compounding effect.
- 6.Avoid serial issuers who buy back at high prices and issue at low ones.
Max profit
Compounded EPS growth from share-count reduction; historical excess returns of 1-3% annualized.
Max loss
Equity downside; buybacks at peak prices can destroy value.
Breakeven
Match broad market over holding period.
When to use
As a quality-leaning equity sleeve in tax-advantaged accounts.
When to avoid
When buybacks are debt-financed in a rising-rate environment.
